There are several myths about chiropractic care. I will share with you the top 5 of them and the fact along.

#1: See Chiropractors Only If You Have Back Pain

Chiropractors are musculoskeletal experts. From assessing, diagnosing, treating to preventing all biomechanical conditions that can arise from your musculoskeletal and nervous system.

In addition, tremendous research supports the benefit of chiropractic for the management of conditions.

Such as musculoskeletal conditions from the spine, extremities, headaches to jaw pain. Plus, neurological conditions that mostly present in the arms and legs as numbness and tingling, or weakness.

#2: Chiropractic Effectiveness Is Unproven

Millions of Canadians suffer from lower back pain. It is one of the most common conditions that cause emergency visits.

Spinal manipulative therapy is also known as adjustment. In numerous clinical studies, organizations have all recommended it as the first method for treatments and prevention of back pain.

From the American College of Physicians, the American Pain Society to The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Also, articles The Bone and Joint Decade Task Force.

Unfortunately, oftentimes people wait too long to seek care. Or they stop their treatment plans too early against the advice of their practitioners. As a result, they didn’t see the results they were hoping for.

As a practitioner, I always ensure to educate my patients so that they can understand their pain better. For example, avoid triggering activities and movements. Also, work towards a strengthening program where they can return back to their daily activities in a timely manner.

#3: Popping Sound Is Bones Rubbing Against Each Other

The popping sound you hear during an adjustment are bubbles created within your joint spaces.

Through feeling your spine, chiropractors assess for sections that may be compromised mobility. Those sections might cause restrictions and pressure around specific areas in your body.

An adjustment will take a joint to its end range of motion. When it resets, there is more joint space which results in optimization of joint range of motion. It also improves overall flexibility at the level of that joint. This is why people feel better immediately after an adjustment and have increased range of motion gradually.

#4: You Need A Referral To See Chiropractors

In all provinces of Canada, chiropractors are the primary point of contact for the general public. Therefore, a medical doctor’s referral is not necessary for a chiropractic visit.

The majority of extended health care plans cover chiropractic care. There are affordable programs through MSP for every family to make care possible for everyone.

Find out more details about MSP coverage on the BC government website.

#5: Chiropractic Adjustments Are Painful

The adjustments are not painful. In fact, they create immediate relief, increase range of motion, and reduction of pain in a specific area. Especially when applied to a restricted and immobilized joint.

However, if adjustments make you nervous, we always recommend you share this concern with your practitioner. There are often other techniques and modalities that we can use to achieve the results above if needed.
