Different Types of Neck Pain

Neck pain can be categorized in more than one type which are discussed below.

Neck Pain Due to Arthritis and DJD

This condition is largely age related. The discs that sit between each vertebrae and act as cushions will start to lose some of their thickness overtime. This results in joint space narrowing which may present as stiff neck and reduced mobility.

Neck Pain Due to Spinal Canal Stenosis

Spinal Canal Stenosis is also an age related condition. However, in this case, the central canal starts to narrow due to increased bone formation over time. This creates a narrowing of the canal which can create increased pressure on the nerve roots or the spinal cord in more severe cases and can cause numbness and tingling in the arms and hands

Muscle and Joint Capsule Irritation

Have you ever woken up with a stiff neck and wasn’t able to move? This is a classic case of a capsular irritation due to impingement.

The facet joints of the neck can not move freely due to a pinching of the capsule and the muscles around the area tighten to guard the neck. This condition has a very quick response rate with chiropractic treatment and patients can feel better instantaneously.

Neck Pain from Poor Posture

The issue with poor posture contributing to pain becomes most prevalent when those poor postures are prolonged and Sustained. In other words, poor posture for 5 minutes as you have to do an awkward task or done momentarily most likely will not result in pain, however, if sustained for an extended amount of time repeatedly, it can be a cause for neck pain.

  • Is Neck Pain a Sign of Something Serious?

Most cases of neck pain are musculoskeletal conditions, meaning the pain is related to an underlying irritation or biomechanical dysfunction associated with the muscles, joints, ligaments, and nerves.

The few cases for neck pain that are not related to musculoskeletal conditions may be due to infections, fractures, spine instability, or metastasis.

These conditions are rare and often present with other signs and symptoms that can show when seeing a medical doctor, physiotherapist, or a chiropractor. If practitioners find your case to be rare or serious, you may be asked to visit an ER to be further assessed.

  • Does Chiropractic Help with Neck Pain?

Chiropractic neck adjustments are one of the most powerful treatment options to relieving neck pain.

If desired by the patient and appropriate for the condition, neck adjustments are extremely effective at alleviating joint impingements that result in loss of neck mobility and stiffness as well as removal pressure from nerve roots that may be causing numbness and tingling into the arms.

Adjustments are provided by our trained and licensed Coquitlam chiropractors after a thorough assessment to ensure a safe treatment can be provided.

  • Is Chiropractic Neck Adjustment Safe?

Neck adjustments are safe to perform when done by a trained and licensed chiropractor.

In fact, this treatment is the most effective and fastest at relieving certain types of neck pain that would normally take much longer to respond to therapy. Neck adjustments are done only after a thorough history is taken and a comprehensive assessment is performed to ensure our patients are a good candidate for receiving this treatment.

For those patients that do not wish to receive chiropractic care for neck pain, there are alternative solutions such as gentle joint mobilization or using The Activator Method, a device that delivers a gentle quick impulse without moving the neck.
