Neck Pain

Neck pain is a very common issue amongst our population. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or occupation. The majority of cases of neck pain are musculoskeletal related issues. This means that the pain is coming from either joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and or nerves. Common symptoms are stiffness, dull or sharp pain and reduced range of motion. Posture plays an important role in neck health. Sustained and poor postures are a common contributing issue to neck pain and stiffness.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Conditions such as arthritis, degenerative disc disease, spinal canal stenosis and nerve pain can result in various types of neck pain. In addition, muscle and joint capsule irritation, poor sleeping habits or poor sustained postures can also contribute to neck pain. The latter is much more common in the general population and also easily treatable with the right approach and diagnosis.

Different Types of Neck Pain

Neck pain can be categorized in more than one type which are discussed below.

Neck Pain Due to Arthritis and DJD

This condition is largely age related. The discs that sit between each vertebrae and act as cushions will start to lose some of their thickness overtime. This results in joint space narrowing which may present as stiff neck and reduced mobility.

Neck Pain Due to Spinal Canal Stenosis

Spinal Canal Stenosis is also an age related condition. However, in this case, the central canal starts to narrow due to increased bone formation over time. This creates a narrowing of the canal which can create increased pressure on the nerve roots or the spinal cord in more severe cases and can cause numbness and tingling in the arms and hands

Muscle and Joint Capsule Irritation

Have you ever woken up with a stiff neck and wasn’t able to move? This is a classic case of a capsular irritation due to impingement.

The facet joints of the neck can not move freely due to a pinching of the capsule and the muscles around the area tighten to guard the neck. This condition has a very quick response rate with chiropractic treatments and patients can feel better instantaneously.

Neck Pain from Poor Posture

The issue with poor posture contributing to pain becomes most prevalent when those poor postures are prolonged and Sustained. In other words, poor posture for 5 minutes as you have to do an awkward task or done momentarily most likely will not result in pain, however, if sustained for an extended amount of time repeatedly, it can be a cause for neck pain.
