Pre and Postnatal Chiropractic Care

Pregnancy has its own set of unique challenges when it comes to dealing with back pain, wrist pain, leg cramps, and groin discomfort (complaints that are commonly reported during pregnancy). Here comes the importance of using chiropractic care during pregnancy.

The additional weight gained while pregnant – about 30 lbs. on average – puts additional stress on the back, knees, hips, feet, and ankles. This results in changes in posture and biomechanics, changes in sleeping positions, and limits the ability to move freely during pregnancy.

Is it Safe to Go to Chiropractor During Pregnancy?

It is extremely safe and highly recommended to see a chiropractor during pregnancy. Many chiropractors work closely with Dulas and midwives to care for their pregnant mommas. To read more about our chiropractic adjustment and care, click here.

Prenatal Chiropractic

Chiropractic is beneficial at all stages of pregnancy. In general, the earlier that chiropractic care is started during pregnancy, the lower the risk of occurrence of conditions such as back pain and hip pain and less likely that more severe conditions such as sciatica can arise.

However, if you already are experiencing aches and pains, seeing a chiropractor is an excellent modality to help with symptom relief and to allow for optimum birthing process.

Postpartum Chiropractic

Depending on if you have a natural birth or C-section, recovery times will vary to resume care. When you have clearance from your OBGYN that you can resume chiropractic are, it is recommended to check in with your chiropractor to ensure your pelvis and hips are in good alignment and to learn strategies to avoid straining parts of your body associated with carrying your baby and breastfeeding.

The Webster Technique

The uterus is a free flowing organ that is held in place by a series of 14 ligaments that have attachments to the surrounding structures such as the pelvis. As the uterus expands, stretching of the ligaments can put tension on the surrounding structures. A Webster chiropractor is trained to identify areas of high tension and targets treatment to reduce tension in those areas allowing the uterus to be in the most ideal position for birthing process

Chiropractic Can Help New Moms Alleviate Conditions Like:

  • Neck pain and lower back pain: Very common in new moms from carrying their babies on one hip and breastfeeding.
  • Mid-back pain: This is commonly caused from breastfeeding and holding the baby.
  • Pelvic pain and aching legs/buttocks: changes to the ligament structure of the pelvis can create tension and stiffness on pelvic and low back structures resulting in pain.
  • Shooting pain into the legs (Sciatica): This is a very common condition in pregnancy as the pelvic bones expand, they can put more tension and compression on the nerves such as the sciatic nerve.
  • Wrist swelling and carpal tunnel syndrome: Active Release Techniques used to alleviate nerve compression help significantly with symptoms of Carpal Tunnel from increased fluid accumulation.

Pregnancy Conservative Care Treatment Options

Let our experts help! Numerous studies show the effectiveness of manual therapy, including chiropractic care, which can help reduce pain during pregnancy and labour.

For chiropractic treatment during pregnancy, we employ conservative care, meaning any treatment that does not include invasive modalities or the use of medication. Examples of conservative care during pregnancy include spinal manipulation and mobilization, soft tissue therapy, cupping therapy, and myofascial release to help reduce pain and improve function.

What chiropractic techniques can be used to help with pregnancy?

Your chiropractic doctor can help with your pelvis, glute, and back tension throughout your pregnancy to help your body feel most comfortable as the uterus grows and the ligaments become lax. Treatment often involves muscle tension release techniques, gentle hip, pelvis, and spinal mobilizations, and adjustments to ensure an optimal pelvis position for the delivery.

Is it safe to receive chiropractic care while pregnant?

Examples of different treatment styles that are 100% safe and effective during pregnancy include spinal manipulation and mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, cupping therapy, and myofascial release to help reduce pain and improve function.

Massage therapy is also very safe during pregnancy and can help mothers relax and have a better state of their body throughout their whole term and delivery.

What is the best type of massage therapy for pregnancy?

Generally, relaxation massages are helpful for pregnancy, but if you are suffering from specific lower back pain, sciatica, or other acute conditions, it is recommended to seek the care of a chiropractic doctor who has experience in treating pregnant patients.

Yes, you may lie on your stomach during massage while pregnant. There are specific cushions that allow patients to lie on their stomachs for the duration of the massage but not all massage therapists may have access to this pillow at their workplace. During my second pregnancy I started having back pains, after getting back to gym the back pain got worse and adding to that pain, my neck got stiff again. I was recommended to see Dr Sabagha by a friend. She was so knowledgeable and helpful. She explained me why I was having a pain. I’ve never been to a chiropractor before so I was a little afraid of the “cracks” that would be done to parts of my body, but Dr. Sabbaghan made sure that I was comfortable and it was absolutely painless! I couldn’t believe it, but right after she finished doing her “manipulations” I felt much much better. After that, Dr Sabaghan showed me exercises that I need to do by myself and made sure I was doing them right. I highly recommend Dr Sabagha to anyone in pain.
