Physiotherapy Clinic in Coquitlam

Coquitlam Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy (Austin Heights)

Pelvic floor concerns are common — but they are not something you have to live with.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of the muscles, joints, and connective tissues that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. These structures play a key role in continence, posture, core stability, and overall comfort.

At Fulcrum Therapy, pelvic floor physiotherapy is provided by Aishwarya Pandya, Registered Physiotherapist, in a supportive and respectful environment where your comfort, consent, and understanding always comes first.

Care is always individualized based on your symptoms, goals, and stage of life. Treatment approaches may vary based on your symptom presentation, pain levels, and level of comfort. This is why an initial assessment with our physiotherapist is crucial to ensure we provide the most tailored 1:1 treatment to achieve remarkable results.

Before your visit, please complete all intake forms online so your physiotherapist can review your history in advance. To help with assessment accuracy, we recommend

  • Keep a 2–3-day bladder and bowel diary noting frequency, leakage, pain, or triggers.
  • Write down any questions or specific goals you may have.
  • Wear comfortable and loose clothing to allow for comfort and range of motion assessments if needed.

No, you do not need a referral from your doctor to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist in BC.

Yes. Having your period does not prevent you from attending pelvic floor physiotherapy.

If you’re beginning care postpartum, we suggest booking around 6–8 weeks after delivery, unless your healthcare provider recommends earlier support.

Bladder leakage is common, but it’s not something you have to accept as normal or permanent. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can assess contributing factors and help improve control, confidence, and function.

The session begins with a thorough explanation and guidance to help you understand what will be evaluated and the reasons behind it.
With your explicit, ongoing consent, assessment may include:

  • External evaluation of posture, breathing, hips, and core
  • Internal assessment when appropriate and agreed upon. Pelvic prolapse can also be evaluated at this stage.

You may stop, pause, or decline any part of the assessment at any time.

Your comfort is a priority. Your physiotherapist will explain what to expect, check in frequently, and adapt treatment as needed. You are always encouraged to ask questions or change direction at any point.

Yes. Pain with intercourse can be influenced by muscle tension, coordination, breathing patterns, and other contributing factors. Pelvic floor physiotherapy focuses on understanding these contributors and guiding you toward safe, gradual improvement.

That’s completely normal. Pelvic floor physiotherapy involves sensitive topics, and your physiotherapist is trained to provide care that is respectful, informative, and paced according to your comfort level. You are always in control of your care.

The number of visits varies depending on your goals, symptoms, and how your body responds to treatment. Your physiotherapist will discuss a recommended plan after your assessment and adjust it as needed.

Yes, we do offer direct billing to majority of insurance companies. We also accept MSP and ICBC related claims as well.

Currently, we do not offer any home visits.

Yes. It is safe to begin pelvic floor physiotherapy during pregnancy, and it often helps relieve pelvic pain, tailbone discomfort, lower back pain, or bladder issues.

Internal assessments are avoided during the first trimester, but education and external treatment can still be highly effective. Learning how to coordinate and relax your pelvic floor during pregnancy may also support labour and postpartum recovery.

Many people seek pelvic floor physiotherapy as a preventative or educational step, especially after pregnancy. Even without pain or leakage, learning how to properly engage and protect your pelvic floor and core can be extremely valuable.

No. In fact, pelvic floor muscles are often too tight or overactive, rather than weak. In these cases, focusing only on strengthening may worsen symptoms. Your physiotherapist will assess muscle coordination, tone, and control to determine the right approach for you.

Not always. Many treatment plans rely heavily on external techniques, education, and movement strategies. Internal techniques are only discussed if relevant and are never mandatory.

Yes. Tailbone (coccyx) pain is often connected to pelvic floor tension, pelvic mechanics, or surrounding joints. Addressing these factors can significantly reduce discomfort and improve sitting tolerance.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help manage symptoms related to prolapse by improving muscle coordination, pressure management, and functional strength. While it may not reverse anatomical changes, it can significantly improve comfort and confidence.

For the initial assessment, we recommend arranging childcare, if possible, as the visit is longer and education focused. Follow-up sessions are shorter and may be more flexible. Please feel free to discuss your situation with your therapist. You are welcome to bring someone with you if it helps you feel more at ease.
