Sports Injury Rehabilitation Clinic in Coquitlam

Coquitlam Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Sports injuries are any injury that occurs during sports and are extremely common among the athletic population. These injuries can range from acute traumas, like sprains and fractures, to chronic issues, such as tendonitis and repetitive strain injuries and can happen to athletes of all ages and skill levels.

Injury education and implementation of appropriate rehab can significantly help speed up recovery from an injury in an athlete. Furthermore, prehab and conditioning for any athlete can also significantly help reduce their risk of injury in the first place.

Specific injuries are more prevalent in some sports. For example, tennis players more commonly present with lateral elbow pain, also known as tennis elbow pain. Although there are specific sports injuries that are more common in a particular sport, injuries can happen at any time and even to the best athletes. They can be impact or nonimpact, and healing time will vary significantly based on the severity and type of the injury.

Common Sports Injuries

  1. Strains & Sprains
This injury is one of the most common injuries affecting athletes of all ages, genders, and competitiveness. Strain and Strain happen when the movement requires more flexibility and strength than the muscle is conditioned to perform. This is referred to as a muscle pull in layperson terms and is usually held within 3-6 weeks with appropriate rest and rehab.
  2. Rotator Cuff Injuries
The rotator cuff is part of the shoulder; therefore, rotator cuff injuries are more common in throwing athletes and sports such as baseball, squash, and tennis. The rotator cuff comprises four individual muscles and tendons; a rotator cuff injury can involve one or more of these muscles.
  3. Fractures
Bone fracture is serious, and the most common mechanism is trauma and impact in the form of a fall or hit from another player. Bone fractures may or may not require surgery based on their type and require a more extended time frame of upwards of 6 months to heal fully.
  4. Tennis Elbow & Golfer’s Elbow
Tennis elbow and golfer elbow injuries get their name because these injuries are common in athletes who play those sports; however, they are not inclusive. These injuries refer to tendinitis (tendon inflammation) of the elbow, affecting the outside and inside of the elbow, respectively.
  5. Achilles Tendonitis
Tendinitis is inflammation of a tendon. The Achilles tendon is strong and thick in the back of our leg, and its fibers blend in with the calf muscles and the plantar fascia from both ends. Achilles tendinitis is painful and can affect one’s ability to walk correctly. It can also lead to plantar fasciitis or calf muscle strain/sprain injuries.
  6. Knee Injuries
Knee injuries occur from impact and nonimpact trauma in soccer players; landing and twisting on a knee is a common mechanism to injure the ACL. However, a hit to the knee from the sides can also cause injury to other supporting ligaments of the knee. Knee injuries vary in intensity and may or may not require surgical intervention.
  7. Shin Splints
Shin splints refer to a strain injury affecting the tibialis anterior muscle, a muscle at the bottom of the shin. Shin splints are common in runners, especially unconditioned runners and weekend warriors. You may also notice this pain with a sudden significant increase in your walking and number of steps.
