A meta-analysis conducted by Liu et al. (2025) thoroughly examined the effects of Reiki therapy on quality of life across diverse patient populations. The study not only assessed overall efficacy but also analyzed data based on condition type, intervention length, and frequency, offering nuanced insights into the therapeutic potential of Reiki.

Patient Populations Analyzed

The 11 studies included in the review covered a wide spectrum of individuals:

  • Cancer patients
  • Post-surgical patients
  • Individuals with chronic illnesses such as arthritis and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Healthy adults under occupational or emotional stress
  • Adolescents with menstrual-related pain

Most studies reported statistically significant improvements in participants’ quality of life.

Cancer Patients

Multiple studies, including one by Alarcão & Fonseca (2016), found that Reiki significantly reduced pain, fatigue, and anxiety among cancer patients. In some cases, quality-of-life scores increased by over 30% following Reiki treatments. However, another study with only four sessions did not show significant change, suggesting that sufficient session frequency is essential.

Post-Surgical and Chronic Conditions

Reiki has also demonstrated benefits for patients recovering from surgery—such as C-sections—where it helped reduce pain medication use, lowered blood pressure, and improved emotional calm. In individuals with chronic joint conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, even short 20-minute Reiki sessions resulted in measurable pain relief and improved physical function.

Healthcare Workers and Healthy Adults

Studies during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that Reiki helped frontline healthcare workers improve sleep, reduce stress, and manage anxiety. In corporate settings, Peruvian employees receiving twice-weekly sessions over three weeks reported substantial relief from job-related anxiety and burnout.

College students receiving regular Reiki treatments for 4–6 weeks also experienced greater emotional stability, energy, and general well-being.

Key Factors in Reiki Effectiveness

Subgroup analyses revealed that the following conditions led to the highest efficacy:

  • At least 8 Reiki sessions
  • Session durations of ≥60 minutes, or conversely, focused acute treatments lasting ≤20 minutes

Patients receiving either of these protocols showed the greatest improvement across physical and psychological domains.
